New Regard

The Forest of Dean Local History Society has for the last 30 years published an annual journal, "The New Regard". The journal is now sent all over the world to universities and libraries as well as to individuals. It provides a vehicle for Forest historians to present the results of their research to a wide audience in the Forest area and beyond. The New Regard is in A4 format and normally consists of over 60 pages incorporating fully illustrated articles.

Many of the more recent volumes of New Regard are still available for purchase from our online store. However if any articles in our New Regard Index are of interest, but are in out of print issues, we  offer a reprint service for specific articles, which provides a download of the article direct from the store. To search for a particular subject featured in the New Regard, please download the New Regard Index. This is in pdf format, when you have downloaded the index, use the pdf  'Find' option to locate articles of interest.

More recently the Society has produced a series of compact discs which focus on particular aspects of Forest history. The first CD, "Photos for a New Century" incorporates 144 photographs which were initially taken as part of the Gloucestershire 2000 Photographic Archive project. The second CD, "The Great War Scrapbook of Laura Morse", consists mainly of obituaries collected from the local Forest Mercury weekly newspaper of young men who were killed in the Great War of 1914-1918. With grant aid from the Local Heritage Initiative (Heritage Lottery Fund), the Society has produced a further CD, "Roll of Honour", which details mining & quarrying fatalities in the Forest of Dean, and also has an index of freeminers.

We have also recently recently republished the "Mine Trail Walks", and the Bixslade Tramroad Trail.
